10 Ideas for Thinking About the Purpose of Your Art.

Does your subject represent a problem that you are interested in solving?

Artists make art for a variety of personal reasons. Artists can make art for themselves or others. Artists can be commissioned or paid by another to make a specific work. I ask my students all the time to think about “why?” they want to create their work. Think about what you want your work to do. What is its purpose? How can you use your subject to do that for you?

Does your subject work for you:

Narrative: to tell ell a story about self, others, events, or phenomena

Expressive: to express a strong feeling or emotion or elicit a strong feeling or emotion from the viewer

Functional: to make something that serves a purpose or has a job

Persuasive: to convince others to think or act in a certain way.  to promote political or social ideas, empathy, awareness, philosophies, or products.

Celebratory: to celebrate occasions, celebrate others, celebrate things

Create Curiosity: to make the viewer curious, uncomfortable, question or interested in the impossible

Exploratory: to explore, practice, experiment, invent, or play

Beauty: to show what is beautiful or interesting about my subject, Decorate or adorn to create beauty.

Interactive: to require the viewer to participate and is essential to the art.

Repurpose: to adapt a material and give it a new purpose.

Identity: to share who I am or Share who we are

Most of my work is about expressing what is beautiful or interesting about my subject. I use patterns to decorate or adorn my subject and to create additional layers that invite the viewer to look deeper and closer. Beauty is everywhere but, the problem is that few people stop to take a breath and look at the beauty in the small things or to seek out the beautiful places in life and to see them in a new light. I hope that my artwork causes people to pause for a moment and look. I am not trying to represent life exactly as it is. I try to express a more personal look and feel.
